The Graceful Preener

Just two more weeks until Spring Break! We can’t wait to get back to the beaches in SC to see our shorebird friends!

A pre-dawn Dunlin from back in December…every now and then the photography gods throw you a bone to keep you waking up in the wee hours of the morning to capture some pretty light! 🤣

These Great Egret babies look so calm now, but just wait until one of their parents returns to the nest for feeding time. The sibling rivalry is real!

Early mornings at Hunting Island State Park are always a treat. But sometimes they can be pure magic! 💕

We have been giving a lot of photography programs to camera clubs and libraries in the Chicago area lately, which has kept us pretty busy this fall and winter. It’s been a good opportunity to go through the archives and work up some of our favorite photos that we missed posting while we were on the road. This pretty Puffin was taken when we visited tiny Grimsey Island in Iceland a few summers back. It is a magical place just north of the Arctic Circle where the birds outnumber the people by the thousands. If you ever get a chance to visit, go!

Our second birding destination in Colombia’s Valle del Cauca was Doña Dora’s roadside cafe where a birder’s paradise awaits the intrepid traveler. Check it out!

The Red-crested Barbet is a striking bird! Here in Colombia, Thanksgiving is just another day, but we feel extremely grateful to be here. Wishing you and yours an enjoyable and relaxing day, however you like to spend it!

Our first stop in Colombia was the beautiful Araucana Lodge located just 90 minutes from the hustle and bustle of Cali. What a tranquil place to begin this birding adventure!

Greetings from Colombia! We are here in the beautiful Valle del Cauca and very excited for a week of photographing the gorgeous birds seen here. This stunner is the Scrub Tanager and is what we hope will be the first of many lifers for us on this trip. Wish us luck!
